Look… we’re a “live and let live” grid… We realise there are other grids out there who do… well… all sortsa shit wrong. But live and let live, right?
Except…
Sometimes, a grid does some stuff which actually affects other grids – and affects their own users adversely. Soooo, let’s talk about DigiWorlds.
Firstly, DigiWordlz run their grid on M$ Windoze. As far as we are concerned, it should be actually illegal to run *any* Internet / public facing host which runs Windoze as it’s operating system. And when we’re talking about Windoze, the term “operating system” is used *very* loosely.
Notice how Windoze is the only “operating system” which needs protection from viruses? Heh. And let’s be very clear and honest here – in the past, Windoze itself has been a virus which has affected the hypergrid via asset poisoning (at the least). Not going to bother linking to relevant resources here – it’s simply a fact and you can look into yourself.
Anyways, enough about that…
Many DigiWorldz users are already aware that their grid disallows teleports to (at least) grids based in Russia and China. Frankly, that’s just wrong. If they want to control their users’ movements like that, they should just become a completely closed grid (ie: no hypergrid access, in or out). I want to mention things like North Korea and how China blocks out a lot of the Internets from their peoples, but I won’t. Oh. Oops.
With all of the above said, let’s move on to the thing that made me (Mattt) write up this post in the first place…
They don’t shout it from any rooftop, but DigiWorldz block the transfer of script type assets to other grids’ asset services. And they do so in a way which basically “poisons” the asset store of the receiving grid.
The above paragraph by itself probably means nothing to most folk without some context. So here’s some…
We took on a user from DigiWorldz. The user was given build permissions on a region, and “rezzed” a Greedy table and score / controller board. It didn’t work. There was no clear reason why, except that under certain conditions an OpenSim exception (error) was raised which said “asset missing from database”. Turned out that it was referring to any of the script assets that were a part of either object.
That same week, another DigiWorldz user shared a translator object with me to study (I’m building a very decent one as an ongoing project). When I dropped it to ground at our own grid, it failed. Same error, same reason.
Last week, we took on two new performers for on-grid events. Both DigiWorldz users. Both handed over their tip jars. Each had very different ones. Both were broken. Same error, same reason.
This week, we also took on a store owner. From DigiWordlz. From the get-go, parts of their buildings themselves don’t work. Same error, same reason.
Having already spent some hours digging into a diagnosis, I finally realised that DigiWordlz themselves are blocking the “export” of just script assets. Turns out, they even (only just, mind you…) admit it themselves: oh, wait. I now can’t find where I read it on their web site a few days ago…
So. Anything you you share or in any way “export” out of DigiWorldz which is scripted will be broken on the target grid. Simple as that.
But here’s an even worserer aspect to the problem: any references to the script assets are still sent intact. So the receiving grid thinks it has the asset and if it runs the opensim asset system it *should* be running in 2024 (or whatever year you’re reading this), it will basically not bother to request it from another grid again. Thus retaining, forever, the broken version. Sure, there are ways to change the uuid of the asset, but more often this does not happen.
The practical upshot of all of the above is this (plug coming): if any or all of this bugs you (or is / will become a problem for you) do not become, or remain, a DigiWordlz user. Join, or migrate to, a different and better grid. CandM World is a fantastic choice. But if we’re not for you for any reason, go to Wolf Territories Grid. For many and various other reasons, we can’t recommend any other grid with any kind of clear conscience 🙂
